Sandstorm Comics to Unveil Three Original Titles at MEFCC 2025
Abu Dhabi-based comic book studio Sandstorm Comics is set to showcase three original comic book titles at this year's Middle East Film & Comic Con (MEFCC), held from April 18 to 20 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. These releases—‘Solarblader’, ‘Acro and the Cat’, and ‘All Upon a Time’—highlight the rising talent and storytelling innovation emerging from the UAE's creative industry.
Exploring Futuristic and Unique Narratives
The first title, ‘Solarblader’, is a Solarpunk-inspired adventure written by Mo Abedin, Emirati creator and Editor-in-Chief of Sandstorm Comics. Set in Abu Dhabi in the year 2587, the story follows a young solarblading prodigy and his friends as they unravel a galactic mystery that could transform their world. Blending fast-paced action, social commentary, and local cultural influences, ‘Solarblader’ builds an immersive futuristic universe from the ground up.
Meanwhile, ‘Acro and the Cat’, crafted by Teko Mamaladze, takes readers into a world of whimsical mystery and psychological depth. The story revolves around Acro, the Professor of Fear and Phobia, who inexplicably loses his ability to terrify the world after adopting a stray cat. To restore his lost edge, Acro embarks on a surreal journey through Phobia Land, encountering eccentric characters, puzzling dilemmas, and ultimately redefining his own purpose.
Completing the lineup is ‘All Upon a Time’, written by Sara Al-Mutawa and illustrated by Lucjan Pakulski. This lighthearted fairy tale satire flips the traditional ‘princess rescue’ trope, following a villain who mistakenly kidnaps the wrong royal—only to discover that his so-called prisoner is far more formidable than he expected. Packed with humor, heart, and sharp storytelling, the comic cleverly challenges classic narrative roles.
Exciting Experiences Await at MEFCC 2025
Fans attending MEFCC can explore these new releases firsthand at the Sandstorm Comics stand (T11, Hall 9), where they’ll have the chance to meet the artists, attend signing sessions, and engage in immersive experiences tied to each comic’s universe.
Expanding the UAE’s Comic Industry
Beyond the MEFCC showcase, Sandstorm Comics is expanding its creative footprint with the launch of a brand-new creative space at Yas Creative Hub later this year. Supported by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the studio continues to play a pivotal role in cultivating regional talent, developing original IP, and shaping the future of comic book storytelling in the Middle East.
